If it weren’t for important sites such as Fasil Ghebbi and Debre Birhan Selassie and the town’s location between Bahir Dar and The Simien Mountains, Gondar might not be so entrenched on the northern historical circuit. Political tensions are high here, tourist numbers are low, and the accommodation and dining options are particularly unfruitful. There’s better value-for-money to be found here with the likes of the L Shape Hotel and AG Hotel Restaurant, but aside from the Best Supermarket you won’t find yourself having much access to infrastructure in Gondar. It might be better to roll in, see the sites, and roll out. At least, that’s what most foreigners seem to do here anyway. – Daniel

Top Tips
Gondar makes a useful base for organising tours in The Simien Mountains. It’s also easier to stock up here at Best Supermarkets than it is in Debark.
Keep an eye on the political situation as both violent protests and road closures have recently affected Gondar.
