The Directions

Head downhill from the past the ticket office. Continue walking down this road beyond the traditional village until you come to a major junction and take a left. You should soon pass the turning for on your right, which you can pop into if you’ve already bought your ticket. Continue down this winding cobblestone road until you pass Alif Paradise Hotel and come to a junction. Take another left and follow that road for maybe 15 minutes until it joins on with the main road to the airport.

Follow the airport road for about 6km out of town. The road will become progressively more rural as you go, and traffic will pass by intermittently. After an hour to an hour and a half down this road you will see a left turn onto a dirt track through a village and a large blue sign post for . Follow the path up to the monastery for about a kilometre. The monastery costs ETB200 so you can choose whether or not to go in. Either way, the scenery is quite beautiful and rural.

Return back the way you came until you reach the fork that originally took you onto the airport road. Instead of taking the left turn back into lower Lalibela, take the steep road heading up and you will soon find your way back to the central roundabout with shortly after the left turn.

Top Tips

There are a few restaurants and small shops on the first third of the walk, but you may want to take plenty of water and snacks for the rest.
Keep an eye out for large birds of prey catching the thermals along the whole route and small grey monkeys on the way up to the monastery.
If you get tired of walking, a bajaj back to town should cost no more than ETB50.
