Kenya has been offering that archetypal East African experience for some time, so it’s no wonder that the infrastructure here is a little better than in neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania. While the hiking activities and safaris on offer here might not be quite as superlative as in Tanzania, the higher tourist numbers in Kenya mean more competition, better value for money and an overall easier experience. Industrialisation and the pollution it brings is more apparent here though (especially between Nairobi and Mombasa) and the natural environment in general is far from unblemished. Nevertheless, with a combination of impressive scenery, world-class game viewing and a pleasant stretch of coastline, you would be hard pressed to regret your experience here. Indeed, Kenya does well to offer up the majority of East African experiences to those tourists that have only a short amount of time.

Top Tips
Allow yourself enough time to come here (if you can afford it). This is a well-rounded tourist destination if you’re after beaches, mountains and safaris. It is a big country though, so you’ll also need the extra time to get between places.
If you’re looking to do a safari on a budget in East Africa, Kenya might be the place to do it. There is prolific game in some parts of the country and the tours that run to them are better value, better organised and more competitive – especially than in neighbouring Tanzania. Look into the Maasai Mara-Lake Nakuru-Amboseli 6-Day Safari.
Getting hold of goods is a lot easier in Kenya than it is in neighbouring countries. Outlets of the supermarket chains Nakumatt and Tuskys can be found in most places.
Watch out for the HGVs that frequent the Mombasa to Kampala road. They are particularly bad between Nairobi and Mombasa, but they can choke up the roads anywhere and create a dangerous need to overtake.
