Diani Beach is a popular spot on the Kenyan coast, especially if you’re into kite-surfing. And it’s true that the beach is quite typically beautiful with its powdery white sand – and the town’s location between Mombasa and Tanzania is quite convenient if you’re just passing through. But don’t expect great value for money here, or a particularly wide range of accommodation and dining options. While tourists seem to like the spot, backpackers might be better off heading further north to Kilifi or Malindi. – Daniel

Top Tips
Diani Beach is a popular seaside resort, so do be careful coming here on a budget. Cheaper restaurants such as Coast Dishes or Swahili Pot (or providing for yourself at one of the many supermarkets such as Shree Green Grocers Minimarket) might help out.
Don’t miss out on visiting both ends of the beach: Cliff Beach and Diani Beach. And if you’re at the latter, you might as well drop by at the Kongo Mosque. Although, do time your visits to the beach well as the tides are very noticeable here. Swimming at low tide is almost impossible.
Taxi-like tuk-tuks will take you up or down the coastal road for KES30 per person. They only go half way along the road though, to the Nakumatt Supermarket and then up to Ukunda. So if you need to go all the way along the beach you’ll have change tuk-tuks at that supermarket and pay another KES30.
