This trip has to be done in a few stages. Firstly, a boda boda from Kilifi to the Mombasa matatus shouldn’t be more than KES100. For the matatu to Mombasa, expect to pay KES150 per person and for it to take just under 1 hour and 30 minutes. Then, you’ll need to take another boda-boda (KES100) in Mombasa to the Likoni Ferry, where you’ll have to queue up to cross the river by a free public boat. Once over the river, you’ll need another matatu (KES100) to Ukunda. From Ukanda, one final boda-boda (again KES100) should get you to wherever you want to get to in Diani Beach.

This is a fairly simple and straightforward coastal journey from Kilifi to Diani Beach via Mombasa. Expect to arrive within four hours, and to be dropped on the main street a little way from the main Diani Beach touristic area.

Top Tips
Don’t expect there to be much luggage space on the matatus. Pay for another seat if you absolutely have to.
Matatu conductors around here seem to be pretty set on sitting at the door side of the first row even though that’s a good spot if you’ve got luggage. As the engine bulges out, the seat next to that is also no good unless you fancy a dead leg ;).
