With tensions as they currently are, pleasant and European-influenced Malindi is about as far north as most tourists will go on the Kenya coast. But even with the situation as it currently is, backpackers and tourists alike are still drawn to this old seaside town, and rightly so. With a good supply of restaurants, shopping and accommodations, and close proximity to some impressive Swahili ruins, Malindi does well to make you feel more comfortable than most similar places nearby. If only the beach were a little more inviting and prices a little lower, there’d be little reason to move on. – Daniel

Top Tips
Expect things to be pretty Italian here, from the food on offer, to the people around you, to the language you will be approached in. Malindi has become an enclave for Italians young and old (but mostly old).
The beaches aren’t much to write home about, but Malindi has a relaxed and likeable charm. You could easily spend a few days here, especially at the immensely good value Ripasso Apartments.
Keep an eye out for the excellent value bags of roasted cashew nuts sold on certain street corners, although do make sure that the ones you choose haven’t gone soft.
Consider visiting the impressive Swahili ruin of the Gedi National Monument while you’re in the area ;).
