Top Descriptions

While Rwanda may not get nearly as much tourism as neighbouring or or have as much on offer as other countries in the region, what it can provide as a travel destination is a calmer and more standardised East African experience. The country is cleaner and better managed for the most part (with rules about plastic bags and motorbike helmets being strictly adhered to) and it’s an overall pleasant place to spend a few weeks wandering about, especially anywhere near to or the . What Rwanda really lacks is a better infrastructure and better connections to the outside world. Imported goods are poor value for money, as are attractions in the country such as , and most locations outside of are just as rural and disconnected as any in . Nevertheless, if you’re willing to live without creature comforts, Rwanda can be quite affordable – especially if you accept the lack of conventional attractions and get stuck in with the locals and their cheap ‘gatogo’ lunchtime buffets.

Top Tips

Rwanda is safer, better organised, more modern and better facilitated than most countries in East Africa. However, it is still very much East Africa. For the most part, Rwanda is still very rural and undeveloped.
Lunchtime ‘gatogo’ buffets are by the far the cheapest way to eat! Hit them up daily if you’re on a budget.
Rwanda is not the cheapest of countries, but as there are very few activities that cost (except in the national parks) it’s possible to keep costs down by simply exploring the place on foot – it’s a very pleasant country to do just that, especially by .
Although journey times are short, the roads are very windy here. If you get travel sick, consider bringing along some medicine for the ride. Shampoos and conditioners are also super expensive here (perhaps because 90% of everyone has a shaved head!) so consider bringing some along too.
