This walk follows Gisenyi Walk 1 (Congo Nile Trail) as far as the fork that divides the main Congo Nile trail from the Pfunda subtrail. You can find this fork about 20 minutes on the road beyond the brewery in Rubona. You will see a clear signpost indicating that straight on leads to the main trail and that left is for the subtrail. For the most impressive views around, take the road heading left onto the subtrail.
This trail runs as far as the Pfunda Tea Estate 30km away, but you can choose to walk along it for as long as you care to. The first hour and a half up is particularly inviting. At first you will pass through a school before heading further up the mountain and through small villages (full of excited children). Behind you should be some excellent panoramic views of Lake Kivu Gisenyi and as you climb higher, excellent views also of Nyiragongo Volcano – on a clear day at least.
If you keep climbing, you will lose the views of the lake but other volcanic peaks of the Volcanoes National Park should start to appear to your left. To return, either continue on to Pfunda (this would be a push in one day) or return the way you came. A moto taxi from the brewery back to Gisenyi (Rubavu) should cost no more than USD1,500 or you can walk if you still have the energy.

Top Tips
If you walk all the way from Gisenyi (Rubavu) , this is quite a tiring walk – especially on a hot day – so do bring supplies.
On the subtrail, watch out for when the school kicks out. If you’re there when it does, expect to be mobbed by (potentially) hundreds of children! High five as many as you can ;).
