Like Gisenyi (Rubavu), Kibuye is another great place to explore and enjoy Lake Kivu. Here, however, the setting is somewhat more dramatic. Some beautiful yet simple accommodations such as Home Saint Jean are nicely perched to make the most of the views, and on a clear day the weaving and winding of the lake and the hills really is quite enchanting. It can either be enjoyed by boat or by many walking trails such as Kibuye Walk 1, Kibuye Walk 2, and Kibuye Walk 3 (Congo Nile Trail). As long as you don’t expect much of the restaurants here, or plan for any high-octane activities, you should enjoy your time in Kibuye. You may even decide to spend longer here than you planned for.

While it might be very tempting to swim in Lake Kivu, do consider the risks of bilharzia (and how to treat the disease) before doing so.
