        The Directions

With your back to the , take the road heading right around the lake for no more than 5 or 10 minutes. Just before you come to the hill heading down to , you will see a large dirt road heading right. Take this road and then quickly take the second right fork onto a small dirt track heading beside the school. Follow this dirt track until you reach a fork in the road, taking the right fork. This small path should then take you up and over the headland and through some farmland. There should be great views of Lake Kivu in front and to the right of you.

After another 5 or so minutes you should intersect with a solid dirt track (one usable by cars). Take the right and stay on this road for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Eventually you will come to a dead end, with two large gates separating private properties. Just before the first gate you should see a very small path heading left by the side of this property. This path is a little overgrown but you can follow it easily enough until you loop back to the dirt road you were just on.

Follow the dirt track again coming back the way you came and passing the original intersection. This road will eventually bring you out at the , which you can choose to go into – should you care to pay the RWF6,000 entrance fee. In front of the entrance to the museum you should see a small path skirting the lake on a small peninsula jutting out. You are welcome to make a short looping tour of this peninsula (20 minutes or so) but be forewarned that there isn’t much of interest here and the path can be a little littered and overgrown.

Continue along the road heading below the and up the other side of the bay until you come to a turning with a sign pointing toward Bethany Hotel. Take this right and follow it for 10 or so minutes until you reach , which makes a lovely (if slightly expensive) lunch/dinner spot. You can also continue along this headland for another 15 minutes to one final vantage point.

        Top Tips

This walk can be combined with for a full half-day’s excursion.
It’s possible to get a little lost during the first portion of the hike as there are quite a few trails. However, as the headland is limited in space, you won’t get lost for too long! Just use the lake to navigate yourself back into town.
The sun is quite strong on this walk and for the most part there isn’t much shade. It would be a good idea to bring water, snacks and a hat – especially if you have feeble skin!
