Top Descriptions

You’ll be greeted by the dramatic backdrop of the Langeberg Mountains upon arrival to Swellendam, and for the outdoor enthusiast, the town’s location between the and the couldn’t be better. While some may backpack into the Western Cape’s heartland to explore that very countryside on day or multiday hikes, most visitors come to Swellendam instead to stroll languidly amidst the museums and architecture of the third-oldest town in South Africa. Indeed, this town has charm aplenty, but it’s aimed mostly at an older and more civilised crowd. If you’ve yet to go grey and are looking to socialise, you probably won’t linger for too long here. Swellendam’s not as hip or as well facilitated as other spots in the Garden Route, but what it does offer up it offers up well. – Daniel

The small, historical town of Swellendam sits at the base of the beautiful Langeberg range. On a clear day, these mountains provide a stupendous backdrop to the town’s numerous colonial era buildings and makes strolling the relatively quiet streets a pleasure. Importantly, despite its colonial air, Swellendam feels unpretentious and its proprietors friendly and sincere. With more than a few good restaurants, a mall and some of the major supermarkets, the town is well facilitated for its size. Sandwiched between the and the , Swellendam also offers good outdoor activities. For anyone who likes a decent hike and is happy to ascend 1,200 metres in a morning, the offers one of those awesome yet rare views; you can look across the land and right up to the ocean. Alternatively, the has game-drive, short-walk, and river-swimming opportunities. Providing you are not in search of a party, Swellendam is definitely a place that most could spend a few days. – Sarah
