With some of the best safaris, hiking and beaches on offer, Tanzania is the superlative East African experience – and the prices (and taxes) reflect this. Whether you’re here to scale Kilimanjaro, venture deep into the Serengeti, or bathe in the lusciously blue waters of Zanzibar, you’d better make sure you’ve packed a thick enough wallet to handle it all. We didn’t, but if you did then you are encouraged to share your thoughts and experiences here. – Daniel

Top Tips
Tanzania is more predominantly Islamic than some of its neighbouring countries, especially on the coast. Pack and dress accordingly, and bear in mind that shops may be closed on Fridays and alcohol may be harder (and more expensive) to get hold of.
Don’t miss out on visiting Zanzibar while you’re here. It might not be a particularly backpacker friendly island, but Stone Town is historically, architecturally and culturally one of the most interesting parts of East Africa, and the beaches of Nungwi and kitesurfing centre of Paje should not be missed.
Due to a new tourist tax (18%) and the high national park fees levied by the Tanzanian government, you might be better off doing your safaris in neighbouring Kenya where an average of USD110pp/pd is quite possible.
We were unable to find an ATM in Tanzania that would allow more than TZS400,000 to be withdrawn at any one time. More frustrating is that each transaction incurred a fee of between TZS8,000 and TZS15,000.
