Stone Town is a classic East African experience, a melting pot of African, Swahili and Arabic cultures and a successful slave and trading port for many centuries. With a smattering of worthwhile sights and a confusing maze of active and fascinating narrow lanes, Stone Town is sure to beguile the first-time visitor for at least a day or two. This is a traditional and religious town, however, so don’t expect late night revelry and bikini-clad beach goers here – save that for other much less populous parts of Zanzibar. – Daniel

Top Tips
Although interesting historically, culturally and architecturally – particularly in an East African context – don’t bank on spending more than a day in Stone Town if you’re exploring it solely as a sightseer.
Any shop, restaurant or (maybe even) hotel away from the coast will probably refuse to serve you alcohol – at least they did to us. If you are thirsty, head towards the Floating Restaurant at the Forodhani Gardens and work your way from there.
It is hot here, but it can be breezy too. Enjoy those breezy spots when you find them.
