The Zanzibar archipelago is on every serious traveller’s bucket list. It is famously alluring, although for what reasons exactly are unclear. Historians and anthropologists alike might very well be drawn to the cultural concoction that is Stone Town, while beach bums and backpackers most often find themselves immediately shooting off to one of the many stunning beaches in search of that picture-postcard experience. Indeed, powdery white sand and lusciously blue waters are in no short supply here, and neither are midrange or even upscale accommodations and dining options. Zanzibar is no backpacker haunt. If you come here expecting to see scantily clad package tourists amid traditional and impoverished seaside villages, then your transition to these islands will be a smoother one. While Zanzibar struggles to compete with other top world locations of a similar ilk, for its East African location this is as good is it comes. – Daniel

Top Tips
Zanzibar is not a backpacking destination by any means. Public transport is limited to taxis and slow dala-dalas, cheap accommodation is thin on the ground, and it can be hard to find a meal for less than TZS15,000. Nevertheless, with few attractions and no safaris to drain the costs, Zanzibar may still work out cheaper than other parts of East Africa.
If you’re into kitesurfing, definitely head to Paje. For historians and anthropologists alike, you’d be better off starting in Stone Town, while those who just want to swim, eat and relax might be best catered for in Nungwi.
Bring alcohol with you from somewhere such as Tanga if you have the opportunity. Alcohol shops are in short supply on the island and bars aren’t cheap to spend the night at.
There are no ATMs outside of Zanzibar Town. Stock up in Stone Town before you head elsewhere.
