Uganda is one of the best countries in the region to have a varied, enjoyable and (moderately) affordable East African experience. The country is extremely green and quite beautifully mountainous in some parts, and there are a healthy enough array of national parks here – even if they are pretty poorly maintained. The people are friendly and welcoming, the food a mix of African, Indian and Swahili cultures, and there’s even some kind of backpacking scene here making it easier to reduce costs a little through group excursions. This is still East Africa of course, so poor value for money, low maintenance, safety and living standards, and a general lack of interesting things to do outside of the safari scene can all but be expected. Saying that, there are opportunities here for some excellent hiking, such as in the Rwenzori Mountains or perhaps a Sabinyo Volcano Hike, and there’s even a solid white-water rafting scene centred around Jinja. If you travel extensively in the region, you might just find yourself dreaming of returning to Uganda more than any other. – Daniel

Top Tips
There’s quite a lot to see and do in Uganda, so do consider giving yourself as much time as possible here. It’s also a little cheaper in Uganda than in neighbouring Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania and offers up just as many (if not more) activities.
Boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are a cheap way of getting about the towns/cities of Uganda and shouldn’t cost you more than about UGX5,000 for every 10km. If you combine using these with a daily diet of street rolexes (chapatti wrapped up with egg and vegetable) for about UGX1,500 a pop, you should be able to reduce your costs while travelling here.
For the most part, the roads in Uganda are pretty good, but if you’re wanting to head to any national parks such as Queen Elizabeth National Park or Murchison Falls National Park, you would be wise to hire a 4×4, especially during the rainy season. Even with the high park and activity fees, these parks are not particularly well maintained and the staff working there are unfortunately paid quite poorly (and therefore expect tips).
