Mbarara is just a stopping off point for most travellers, either en route further north, south or north-west to Queen Elizabeth NP. But as rest stops go, there’s enough here to keep you for an extra day or two. The pleasant Little Woods Inn makes for a good base, the Nakumatt Supermarket a good refueler, and sights such as the Biharwe Eclipse Monument and the Igongo Museum are a welcome diversion from the cluttered and clunky Mbarara city. There’s even some interesting colonies of large fruit bats in nearby trees should you care to add that species to your safari checklist. – Daniel
