There are three volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains that can be accessed fairly easily from Kisoro, and Sabinyo may just be one of the best to visit on a day hike. The 6- to 8-hour route is equal parts challenging and exciting, with three separate peaks navigated by ladders and stairs and absolutely excellent views of the surrounding Muhabura and Gahinga volcanoes (on a clear day). It’s also deep in the territory of the famous mountain gorilla, and if you’re lucky you might just see one at a fraction of the cost. And if you don’t, well the environment alone is evocative enough to make this experience a worthy one. – Daniel

Top Tips
If you’re uncertain which volcano in the Virungas to hike, consider this one. It’s certainly more exciting than the Bisoke Volcano Hike in Rwanda.
Expect to be navigating steep (and mostly makeshift) wooden ladders/stairs for quite a large portion of this hike, but especially up and down the three peaks.
Keep an eye out for chameleons on this route. We saw two along the way and two more in the trumpet-flower bushes in the Ntebeko car park. There’s also a small, but very real, possibility of coming across gorillas on this route.

That's great to hear. Did you climb any other volcanoes, or go gorilla tracking?
