Beijing, the heavily populated capital city of China and the country’s centre of culture and politics, can be a mixed experience for both travellers and expatriates. If you’re at all into Chinese history and culture, then this city has so much on offer that you could easily spend a busy week here and not get remotely bored. With impressive sites within the city such as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, and the Great Wall of China only a relatively short journey outside of the city, for many Beijing offers an archetypal Chinese experience. Public transportation is good, restaurants are abundant, and much of the city is low-rise with the winding alleyway hutongs affording some good opportunities for photography. However, many people find the hustle and bustle and smog of the capital to be a little overwhelming, and if you visit on a particularly polluted day then many of those famous attractions may well be hidden by a blanket of thick PM2.5. Nevertheless, whether you end up loving or hating the northern capital, there’s so much on offer in Beijing that it’s still worth visiting – if only to make up your own mind.
