Tourists don’t really visit Datong for the city itself. Though some serious reconstruction is going on, many areas are still not particularly pedestrian friendly – and some areas of the city, especially near to the ancient city walls, have looked particularly reminiscent of a bomb site for some time. Nevertheless, the attractions that do draw tourists here, such as the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple are certainly impressive and well worth the journey. Most of these attractions are in the caves and mountains that surround Datong and take a little effort to get to, but as long as you stay close to train or bus stations you shouldn’t have much trouble getting about.

Top Tips
Don’t expect too much on offer in Datong in terms of dining. There are some good restaurants here, particularly if you like hot pots, but these can be spread out across quite large distances. Do some research online before heading out to eat, perhaps.
It can get very cold here in the winter, so do prepare if you’ll be travelling here in or around that season.
Don’t miss out on the Yungang Grottoes while you’re here, whatever you do. There are hundreds of well preserved Buddhist carvings in these caves just outside of the city.
