Top Descriptions

This may be the second most visited building in , ( being the first), but it is arguably the most marvellous. It is bigger than , and as it is importantly located atop a mountainous viewpoint, the grandeur is just that little bit more. Thanks to its distance from the entrance, this site can actually be viewed in relative serenity at points in the day. The walk here alone can be a highlight for many, but to then be rewarded with Ad -Deir makes the whole thing a truly unforgettable experience. – Sarah

Top Tips

The walk to the Monastery is said to be 10km from the very beginning of the entrance, and does indeed include 850 steps at the end. This is quite enjoyable for a seasoned hiker (and by seasoned, we mean one used to the heat!), but if you are not then factor in the time it will take you to reach this wondrous site (or rent a donkey/camel) and remember to appreciate the scenery as you go.
There is an overpriced café and some basic toilet facilities here, so you can rest a while and watch the herders (both shepherds and tour guides) pass you by.
Don’t miss some excellent viewpoints adjacent to this site. They may be some of the best views Jordan has to offer. Simply continue on the well trodden path that leads up past the café and to the right until the paths culminate at precipitious and dramatic views.
