    Top Descriptions

As capital cities go, especially those in , Vientiane is pretty relaxed and manageable. There’s a good international dining and cafe scene here for the midrange traveller and a strong expat crowd, and for the most part things are clean and orderly – if a little bland. The city’s position opposite on the banks of the Mekong River makes for pleasant evening strolls, where there’s also a congested but handy night market for stocking up on souvenirs and knock-off clothes. While Vientiane is unable to boast an impressive array of attractions, religious sites such as , and are certainly worth your time, and the nearby is definitely as intriguing and creative as it is bizarre. Whether you find yourself here at the beginning or end of your experience, this city is not a bad place to kill a couple of days by any means. However, while Vientiane might be symbolic in its size and lack of facilities of what this country has in store, it clearly lacks the rural limestone scenery of northern that has no doubt drawn you here in the first place. Vientiane is also hotter, drier, flatter and more mosquito-ridden than locations further north, so if you’re visiting during March, April or May then do be forewarned. – Daniel
