Whether you like the city or not, if you’ve travelled much in Asia at all you will no doubt know Bangkok to some degree. For most, the capital of Thailand offers a first foray into Southeast Asia, and for many the first excursion also into independent travel to places exotic and unknown. And what an entrance it is. In certain districts, Bangkok is busy and grimy and bustling, a melange of smells and frenetic traffic, of uneven pavements and eager hawkers. Yet take a street or two over and the shacks and street food give way to high-rise luxury apartments and upscale international dining. Truly, Bangkok has something to offer for everyone. And it’s a huge city – you could return here numerous times (and you probably will) and still discover new corners, hidden temples and pockets of tradition and culture. There’s no doubting it: Bangkok is an Asian powerhouse. And whether it’s your type of city or not, your time here would be easier spent if you learn to move at this city’s pace and appreciate it for what it has on offer. – Daniel

Top Tips
If you don’t have long in the city, the classic backpacker haunt of the Khao San Road easily offers the densest collection of accommodations, restaurants and travel agencies. But do be warned, the scene there is not for everyone.
When taking a taxi from either airport to the downtown area, your cheapest bet would be to go on the meter instead of agreeing on a price. And if you’re in a rush, tell your driver to take the toll roads for an extra THB120.
