If you’re not a city person then the frenetic pace of Vietnam can be quite a shock, especially in the largest of cities such as Ho Chi Minh (where it can be difficult just to cross the road). Hue takes a more laid back approach to city life. The roads are smaller and leafier for the most part and the facilities more compact. There’s even a discernable rush hour, meaning that the traffic does calm down at certain hours of the day! It’s also a city that doesn’t seem to revolve around tourism, with most eateries being small and simple affairs aimed mostly at the local clientele. This lack of tourist focus is refreshing and quite the surprise, especially seeing as how much intact history Hue has to offer its international guests. As if the Imperial City weren’t enough, the tombs of Dong Khanh, Khai Dinh, Minh Mang and Tu Duc lie quietly and serenely just outside of the city limits. If you’ve come looking for beaches and bars, then you’ve come to the wrong time and place. – Daniel
