Top Descriptions

This is a remote, quiet and poorly facilitated border. It is, however, fairly smooth, clear and well-organised.

Top Tips

The first desk you come to on the Vietnamese side will change money for you at an acceptable rate (although watch out for bills being skimmed off). You’ll want to have crisp USDs for your visa, which can be bought on arrival.
Expect a whole array of random charges on the Lao side. We paid LAK10,000 for processing, LAK20,000 for a stamping fee, LAK5,000 for a temperature check and a further USD2 for who knows what! If you question the immigration officers about it, they very quickly get annoyed.
If you’re not Vietnamese or Lao, you will no doubt hold the bus up. Try to have everything in order to move things along quickly.
As far as is visible, there are only toilets on the Vietnamese side of the border.
