Top Descriptions

Karnak is one of the biggest ancient complex attractions in the world. Though much of the site is in decay, what remains is still captivating. The Great Hypostyle Hall is probably the highlight, with many columns still standing. Wandering around the rest of the complex and wider grounds is also good fun, taking the time to examine as much as possible as any fallen, leaning, or crumbled rock, may well have something to behold. – Sarah

Top Tips

There are bathrooms and guides at the entrance, should you be looking for either.
This may be a popular site with tour groups but it is possible to stray from the main path and feel as though you are discovering your own ancient relics.
There is a bit of a walk from the car park to the entrance, and around the site itself, so do consider bringing hats and plenty of water, especially in the summer heat.
The sound and light show that is put on in the evenings runs at different times for English, German and French. These times alternate daily, so do check before you come.

Top Descriptions

The grandeur of Deir el Bahari is perhaps best appreciated from afar. Built as if to form the base of the cliff, the main temple complex here stands square and strong. As you approach, you can almost imagine the royal dead climbing the enormous staircase which allows access to the upper levels. There are a good variety of statues and preserved paintings and hieroglyphics to get an idea of how the Egyptian saw fit to honour their dead. – Sarah

Top Tips

If you are happy to pay inflated prices, there is a café just outside the ruins which may be a place to enjoy a cold ice cream or energising coffee.
There is a shuttle bus/tram that takes visitors from the car park to the temple complex. However, you may want to savour the site for a little longer and approach on foot.
One or two of the better paintings here have been covered by cloth. Expect to either pay a tip to a lingering “guard” to show them to you, or be prepared to have a quick peak when said guard is targeting another tourist.

There is a beauty in the Dendera Temple not found elsewhere in , perhaps in all of . It may not have some of the big statuary, but inside is extraordinary. Comparative to other ruins, this temple still feels very whole. The ceiling of the main entry hall is covered with colourful, mythical and monstrous depictions. In fact, there is little inside this temple that has worn bare, with each room, column, wall, stairway and chamber, offering artistry to inspect and enjoy. Moreover, you are able to climb to the rooftop and take in the great view across the expanse of desert that abruptly turns to green. – Sarah

Top Tips

For a small tip a local gentleman may show you to a stairway which leads below the temple to a decorative under room.
There are a couple of ruins outside that are still worth exploring, so perhaps do this before entering (and being consumed by) the main temple.
Do not underestimate how long you may want to be here. The condition of this complex is excellent, and it is possible you may want to linger that little bit longer.

This is one of the less visited and therefore more tranquil sites for exploration. Though it may not feature many restored/preserved pieces such as the , it is still noteworthy. Colour still crops many of the columns, one of the biggest sculptures found of Ramses lies on its side here, and hieroglyphics are plentiful. – Sarah

Top Tips

The sun is unforgiving in the summer and there are no amenities here, so bring hats and plenty of water.
As with most sites in , the guides can be a little persistent. If you start to get followed, perhaps do a loop or two around the columns to lose any overly zealous helpers.

Top Descriptions

Luxor Temple can easily lure one into wonderful past. The avenue of human headed sphinx offer some well preserved relics, but it is the two, seated, Ramessess which remain at the entrance of the temple that instantly instil a sense of awe and anticipation. Though crumbled in places, the inside does have enough to capture most visitors’ imaginations and admiration; columns, statues and hieroglyphs. It may be smaller than nearby , but it is arguably no less impressive. – Sarah

These majestic statues in the West Bank are thought to be some 3,400 years old. Though little else surrounds them, the lack of ruins here simply accentuates the towering height of these pieces. Well worth a stop. – Sarah

Top Descriptions

This is a small and rustic riverside restaurant that wouldn’t seem out of place on a beach in South East Asia. However, what is served here is genuinely good and hearty Egyptian food along with warm hospitality. Compared to other eateries in , Nile View is certainly one of the best options for quality, fresh and tasty food. The price is very reasonable too. Be prepared to relax for a while with a homemade lemonade whilst you wait for the food to be slowly cooked. – Sarah

Top Tips

Do come here with a healthy appetite as the menu is full of delicious things you will want to try, and the portion sizes are decent.
There is no alcohol here but you are welcome to bring your own. We tried to purchase a bottle of beer from the bar next door to take away but fierce rivalry (or so we assume) resulted in us being unsuccessful.
As is Egyptian hospitality, do expect an offer of a free tea at the end of your meal… or perhaps even the next time you simply pass by.
It appears that only the main owner is fluent in English and therefore you shouldnt expect great communication with all staff.
