Top Descriptions

The tour offered by the Dorze people might be a little off the cuff, but it’s definitely interesting to be able to explore this fascinating and quite rural Ethiopian village. Once you’ve found a guide, you will visit one of the many beehive/hippopotamus-like huts the Dorze are famous for, where you will explore the grounds and vegetation as well as be invited in for a little food and alcohol. It’s a cordial but humbling experience.

Top Tips

If you’re taking the to save costs, you might want to also befriend a local on that bus and ask them to guide you for about ETB100. Official guides often charge a lot more and may take you to less authentic parts of the village.
Expect to be shown inside one or two of the Dorze’s impressive bamboo-thatch houses and to be offered some local food and drink as part of the community visit.
If you don’t fancy taking the bus or a guided tour, a bajaj can be commandeered with a driver in for about ETB500 return. The driver may also be able to act as your guide, though confirm this with them beforehand.

Top Tips

Although not the cheapest of activities, this tour is good value if you can get a group together as it combines a boat tour of Lake Chamo with a short hike in the Nech Sar plains.
You can expect to see plenty of aquatic birds, a collection of large crocodiles, the odd hippo and fisherman, and a few families of zebra and gazelle while on the tour.
While the tour often lasts between 4 and 6 hours, don’t expect to be provided with any food or drink.

The Directions

Come out of the and head right to the roundabout. Take a right at that roundabout and follow that road out of town for about ten minutes. You will soon enough see a sign for on your right. Take that right turning onto a dirt path and follow it straight for another ten minutes until you reach the ticket office. At the ticket office, you will be required to pay the ETB90 entrance fee and hire a scout for between ETB50 - 200. Negotiate hard to get a fair price for the scout.

From the ticket office it’s just over 3 kilometres to the Forty Springs that is named after. Along the way, the hot and dusty track will pass through scrub and into a thicker and taller forest that will eventually lead to the rather disappointing cold springs. After dipping your feet in the stream, return back he way you came. If the scout has been particularly useful at spotting wildlife along the way, you may want to give them a small tip.

Don’t come here primarily for the Forty Springs as you will be greatly disappointed. Instead, treat this as a brief entrance into the national park and a chance to spot some of the park’s wildlife.
The park entrance tickets are for 24 hours, so if you are thinking about doing the consider doing this walk the day before and using your entrance ticket for both activities.

Top Descriptions

While it’s not a big hitter in the East African scene, Nech Sar National Park does offer a wild and exciting safari experience in the Ethiopian south. You can expect to see prehistorically giant crocodiles here (they’re easier to spot than in other countries nearby) and a tonne of birdlife. Just come here more for the experience than wildlife, otherwise you might be somewhat disappointed.

If you’ve written a description for Nech Sar National Park you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

The entrance ticket is valid for 24 hours, so try to use it with more than one activity to save on costs.
While wildlife is neither as abundant nor as diverse as it once was, Nech Sar makes a good entrance to the safaris of East Africa. For the already initiated, think hard about whether or not the cost is worth it to you.
The ‘God’s Bridge’ that separates Lake Abaya from Lake Chamo can be impassable after the rains, even in a 4×4. Consider taking a boat tour instead.
