Top Descriptions

Seeing as this is one of the major bus stations servicing the area, you’d think there’d be more than a desk for the ticket man and a wooden crate for the guests. But nope, that’s all there is. If you want the toilet, there’s one in the petrol station over the road.

Top Tips

NOTE: Our to bus with Simba Coach did not go as planned. We were told to be at this station for 6.30am, but it turns out that the bus to comes from Mombasa and due to the Likoni Ferry it doesn’t arrive usually until between 8am and 9am. At 8.15am we were thrown onto another bus (Tahmeed) without any explanation – nor any reserved seats.
If you’re looking to run between Mombasa and , then Simba Coach comes fairly recommended.
Don’t expect much at this bus station. It is indeed where you’ll pick up the bus, and you can make reservations here, but don’t expect a toilet or waiting room or anything similar. If you do need the loo, the gas station over the road has some free facilities.

Top Tips

NOTE: Our intention was to travel with Simba Coach through , but we were thrown onto this bus at the last moment with no explanation. This page therefore needs your review too to be complete!
You can expect the journey to take about an hour from before reaching the and hour to an hour and a half for border formalities, and then a further hour to .
This bus company wasn’t too bad at all, but because we were thrown on at the last minute by Simba Coach we had the worst seats at the back of the bus (and there are a lot of speed bumps for the section after the border). Try to find the Tahmeed ticket office and reserve yourself a seat number for more comfort ;).

Top Tips

On the same street and even cheaper than , Swahili Pot makes for a good contender for one of the best value restaurants in the area. It also has a pleasant enough garden to eat in.
Try out the chicken biryani here. Unusual for East Africa is that it comes with a generous portion of chicken!

Top Tips

If you’re on a budget yet have somehow made it to , Coast Dishes Restaurant would be a good spot for a better-value meal.
Try the beef biryani (you get a lot more meat than with the mutton or chicken). It’s more like a mild and thick curry than a spicy dry-rice dish, but at KES400 it’s good enough for a lunch or dinner for sure.
Don’t have high expectations for the décor here and expect to be sharing your table with others on a busy day.

Top Tips

This is a long and quite wide beach, fairly sparsely facilitated with bars and restaurants. The area around is a good spot for a swim.
The tide goes out quite far here, making swimming at low tide quite difficult. Ask the locals when the best time is to swim if that’s what you’re here primarily to do.
Bring a hat, sunscreen and water. There is very little shade on this beach.

This is one of the few places along this coast line where you can enjoy a cold or hot beverage with your feet quite literally in the sand. The atmosphere ranges from romantic to lively, depending on the crowd (there is a 60+ expatriate scene who appear to like a daytime wine or two) and time of day. Regardless of how busy or quiet it may be, the food and service seems to remain relatively good throughout. – Sarah
