The Directions

Starting at (or a couple of kilometres west of there if that’s where your taxi drops you), head east along to . The walk between the two beaches is very pleasant and shouldn’t take you more than an hour and a half. You might want to time your arrival at with lunchtime so that you can enjoy a pleasant meal at or a light snack at .

When you’re ready to leave , head east up the main road hugging the coast for about 30 minutes. The road will almost bend back on itself as it climbs uphill, affording some excellent views of Buffalo Bay below. Once at the top of the hill, it shouldn’t take you too long until you come to a sign on your left pointing right to ‘Brenton Lake’. Take this right turning and walk all the way down the next hill. You should now be crossing over the headlands, with in the distance.

Follow this road down the hill until you get to a T junction and then take a left. Stick on that road for another 10 or so minutes until you come to a crossroads with a turning on your left, a private and blocked road on your right and a ‘residents only’ road straight ahead. Regardless of not being a resident, continue straight ahead for another 10 minutes until you reach the train tracks. Take a right at the train tracks and follow them all the way back to ! It shouldn’t be more than an hour from here – probably less!

The Directions

Starting at the opposite the entrance to the , follow the ‘Lagoon Edge Walkway’ around the bay until you reach the main road. This should take you less than 30 minutes. Once you reach the main road, take a right and follow this very straight street for about an hour until you reach the signposted turnoff for , which you can choose to visit first or which you can return to after visiting . Do be warned that about halfway along this main road the path will run out and you will be forced to walk along the grass verge.

Continue along the road beyond the turnoff. Within 20 minutes you should start climbing up towards . You’ll need to take a left pretty soon after heading uphill, but this left to the viewpoint should be clearly signposted. After taking this left you’ll follow the road more steeply uphill for another 20 or so minutes until you get to one of a series of stunning viewpoints of , the Heads and . If you’d also like to visit , continue along this read beyond the viewpoints until you come to a right turn with a signpost pointing down to the beach. Be warned that it’s a steep way down, but it’s worth it for the view at the base of the Heads.

Return the way you came until you reach again the left turn to . Take this turn and then walk the 4km circumference of the island. This should take you about an hour. If you head clockwise around the island you should be able to follow the Steenbok Reserve trails along the coast before coming to – which is a lovely spot for a swim. Should you get thirsty or hungry at any point while on the island, you can head into the middle to find the well-signposted . To return to , simply head back the way you came!

This is a long walk (with little to no shade), so you might want to split it into two days. You could set one day aside for and and the other day for and .
Don’t expect to pass too many restaurants or shops along this route. Bring supplies with you.
We didn’t see any public transport in the 6 hours we were walking, so be prepared to have to walk there and back. We did, however, see plenty of local workers attempting to hitchhike, should you consider that an option.
