This is a small and rather unimpressive Swahili ruin. If you’re headed up the coast of Kenya, you might be better off visiting the Gedi National Monument instead.

To get here, take the Tanga to Tongoni Ruins Bus and alight at the sign for Tongoni Ruins (the driver should tell you when to get off if you ask). From the sign, it’s a 15-minute walk down a dirt track toward the ruins and the sea. There’s only one turning – a fork in the road that you should head left at – so you shouldn’t get lost. Ask any villager for ‘mogofu’ if you do.
Although some travel guides list the entrance cost at TZS10,000, the ticket office was closed when we were there and no one was around to take payment. Perhaps you’ll be as lucky, because otherwise you might find the attraction a little overpriced.
Make sure you bus here early in the day. Buses seem to be quite infrequent coming back as the coastal road to Pangani doesn’t receive much traffic.
