      Top Tips

If you only want a half day (which is tiring enough), it’s easy to haggle this down to at least UGX15,000.
Try out a few boats – the one we rented kept veering left and made it difficult to get anywhere.
Don’t even consider doing this is if it looks like storm clouds are rolling in. The storms here (hail especially) can be rough.

              The Directions

This is a loop that can be done in either direction: With your back to the front gate, you can either start by heading along the road in front of you, or you can take a steep and small local path directly to your right up the mountain. The route described here heads along the road and returns down the local path. Follow the main road out of town towards , heading past the Bird Nest Resort and up to the 5-way junction at the top of the hill. It should take you no more than 40 minutes. From here at the top of the hill, you should be able to get good views of down one side – especially from to your left – and obscured views of on the other.

To complete the loop, take the turning to your right. You should see a sign pointing towards about 2km away. Follow this road up the hill for about 20 or so minutes until you see a sign for on your right. You can choose to stop here for some food or drink if you need a break – or just to admire the excellent views from the restaurant. Otherwise, you will want to take the dirt track on the right just before you get to the restaurant. If you can’t find it, the restaurant staff should help you, but it’s easy enough to locate. You’ll know you’re on the right dirt track if you quickly come across a barbed-wire fence on your left demarcating the property of .

Follow this steep dirt path down towards the lake. There are some paths that veer off but you’ll want to stick to the largest one. You should go past what looks like a collection of beehives and then down into the village. If you’ve stuck to the main path (right near the end you’ll want to take the right fork), then after about 25 minutes or so you should pop out right in front of !

Expect to be heckled by a few boda-boda and boat owners on this walk, and orphanage workers after donations.
