        Head north from the to the Kabatoro Gate. Shortly after this gate you will find a track in front of you clearly signposted for the Katwe Explosion Crater Track. The only deviation from this path is a 5km detour to the baboon cliffs about a third of the way in to the journey. The path is clear and so you should have no problem following it to the .

        This is a scenic and off-the-beaten-track drive, so don’t consider coming here unprepared or without a 4×4. You’ll cross over and up and down the craters, which on a clear day offer excellent views of . With a bit of luck, you’ll pass by families of baboons, mongoose and guinea fowl, and end up at the .

        Top Tips

        Definitely bring a 4×4 for this trip as there are some steep sections climbing up to the viewpoints. Also watch out for tse-tse flies.
        The viewpoints marked on the maps are not marked in situ.
        The deviation to the baboon cliffs (regardless of whether baboons are actually there) is worth it for the view over the craters. It is probably the best view of the drive.

                This is one of the best opportunities in the country for a riverside safari. Deep in the heart of QENP, you’ll see hippos, crocodiles, waterbuck, elephants and more all close up on this boat cruise. Bring a camera along, because you’ll surely be wanting to snap away. Just don’t get too close to the edge of the boat!

                Sit on the left side of the boat for the best viewing conditions – or stand upstairs on the viewing platform.
                The UWA boats might not be as comfortable as those of the Mweya Safari Lodge, but they do at least include an onboard toilet. However, we did experience some questionable levels of professionalism from the staff of the UWA (in the sense that they reversed into a herd of hippo simply to aggravate them into action).
                You might want to bring another layer, especially if the clouds roll in, as it can be quite a bit chillier on the water than in Mweya.

                        If you come here expecting to definitely see lions, you may very well be disappointed. However, if you admire the location for its scenery and open savannah environment you will be more likely to enjoy your time here.
                        If you are set on seeing lions in the Kasenyi Plains, head north onto the new and old kob mating grounds tracks. Just don’t expect these tracks to be clear or at all well sign posted.
                        Although there is a through road saying ‘no access’, currently you are allowed to explore this road as it’s good for spotting lions.

                                If you come here looking for tree-climbing lions and don’t find them, you can expect to be disappointed. A 3-hour game drive spent mostly looking at fig trees is very rarely anyone’s idea of a good safari.
                                The tracks are pretty confusing here (and quite overgrown), so do take a guide (UGX69,400USD20).
                                Apparently the tree-climbing lions here can often be located outside of the boundaries of , sometimes for up to a month at a time – especially in the Congo. Be prepared for the lions not to be here, although the guides will still endeavour to find them in the fig trees for you.

                                        Compared with other game drive locations, the north circuit isn’t particularly fruitful.
                                        You probably don’t need a guide for this track as the trails are pretty straightforward.
                                        Do take some time at the end of the loop to veer right and away from the main gate to visit campsite II and the hippos that wallow in the river there. You will also be able to see (and throw a stone into) the Congo on the other side of the river.

                                                Although this is mainly used as the through road between Katunguru and the Mweya Peninsula, there can be some good game viewing here – we saw a Leopard very close up within an hour.
                                                Be warned that the Leopard Loop is a bit rough on the car, in fact there was a felled tree that forced us to turn around when we were there.
                                                If you consider taking one of the tracks branching off of the Channel Track, such as the Royal Circuit or Leopard Loop, expect to find poorly maintained tracks with unclear sign posting. You should probably take a guide if you’re set on seeing them and most certainly a 4×4.
