Top Descriptions

Dali Old Town is famed for its ancient origins. As with many sites in , the original structures have undergone restoration over the last century – though the city layout is said to remain the same. There are 4 or 5 main streets, a city wall, and watch towers, providing just enough variety to not feel like you are stuck in souvenir loop.

Top Tips

If you come to Dali at Christmas, don’t be surprised for the old town to turn into a snow-spray can party. No man, woman, or child, avoids attack (regardless of age).
Though the old town may only occupy a day of your time, the nearby and are well worth staying in the area for.
This was once known as a backpacker spot. This is reportedly not the case anymore, as the number of local tourists greatly outnumbers others.

Route:There are three or more routes that can lead you onto the mountain path from . One possible way is to take the road just before (to the left of the site if you are looking at it straight on). Stay on this path and you should quickly start to incline as you begin to climb. Once on the well laid mountain path it is possible to walk either left or right. With your back to the town, you can walk right for a few kilometres before the path disappears, at which point you can walk back, pass the point you started and continue on to the . From here you can find a clear but rocky trail down the mountain. You’ll eventually reach a dirt road that leads back to the main road.

What are the numbers and averages?

Altitude:4000m
Distance:12km

Top Descriptions

This is a very accessible hike for the able-bodied. A reasonably well laid path of stony steps and uneven slabs leads you up to over 4,000m and around the front of Cangshan Mountain. Pagodas and shrines are dotted along the way and it is possible to have clear views across and to nearby . However, due to the altitude of this mountain range, the time of year you hike Cangshan will have an impact on the experience. During winter, it is more likely to be a hike of solitude. Though the path is good for a few kilometres, it does (or at least did) run out at one point. Also, during the coldest months there is likely to be icy and snowy patches which may prove treacherous for some.

Top Tips

Though reportedly well serviced in the high season, on a non-national holiday day in winter, this path can be very quiet. Due to the sheer drop in parts, walk with caution and think about going with another person.
There is reportedly a chair lift here, should you not want to hike.
It is recommended to take all essential provisions with you, as there are very few amenities once up the on path.
