Top Descriptions

This ancient ‘rose city’ is one of the most satisfying historical sites our planet has to offer. Petra’s breadth is as stupendous as its structures; offering more than enough to occupy you for days. Iconic and towering, both or can make you feel appropriately small and are indeed majestic. However, it is the kilometres of trails winding around, and in many cases up, that will gratify any explorer or budding hiker. Perch on the or even the and it is easy to be consumed by the landscape and imagine what once was. Petra will tantalise most people’s inner historian and adventurer and is very much worthy of its World Heritage status. – Sarah

Top Tips

If it is at all possible, definitely give yourself at least two days here. Not only is this site huge, but why not appreciate these monumental structures more than once?!
Aside from the archetypal buildings such as and , there are some fantastic little hikes leading to wonderful spots such as the and .
Avoid the tour groups as best you can and arrive as early as possible!
Even in spring the day time temperatures can soar here so carry plenty of water and provisions; especially if you are on a budget! Beer in particular is very overpriced.

Top Descriptions

This tour offers the opportunity to explore and experience the Bedouin lifestyle. Close up encounters with sand dunes, ancient inscriptions and desert rock formations is the norm. The sand here is spectacularly red and the scenery unique. The rustic is simple, along with the traditional evening entertainment and meal. – Sarah

Top Tips

Do pack layers for the cold desert night. A cold wind can also pick up towards the end of the day on the jeep, so think about keeping a scarf handy for that and the morning drive out.
If you want something a bit stronger than tea to keep you warm of evening, you can bring your own beers or liquor.
If you are starting your tour in the afternoon, consider making a packed lunch before setting off – or be prepared for a very limited choice of restaurants in .

Top Descriptions

Wadi Rum Village is a remote, small and dusty little place, with scarcely any amenities. A few hundred Bedouin inhabit the town, who have settled in mostly concrete structures. You may find yourself here briefly, or possibly overnight, as it is the starting point for excursions into the Wadi Rum Valley proper such as the . The landscape is still somewhat provoking, with giant red sandstone hills and rocks rising around the parameter . Also, if you haven’t had much chance to experience rural yet, it isn’t a bad place to observe a few camel herders and children rolling tyres down the dirt road or dragging pieces of polystyrene around. – Sarah

Top Tips

If you do find yourself here for a couple of extra hours, follow the road that you take into the village towards the valley. About half of the way along you will hopefully see a plausible route up the mountain on the right. Climb as high as you dare to for views of the town.
There is a restaurant on the main road, just as you come into the town; we found this the best bet for food – but even then there were only sandwiches.
There is a tourist information kiosk here but it was not open when we were in town.
You will pass a check point on the main road before arriving into the village. If travelling independently, do make sure you have your identification and permits in order for presentation.

Excitement and awe rise in equal measure as you pass through the shaded Siq and catch first sight of the iconic Treasury. The rose rock glowing in the morning light is as archetypal as you imagined and the lingering camels and donkeys simply add to the authenticity of the location. – Sarah

Top Tips

Arriving early in the morning will seriously increase your chances of having this (almost) to yourself, and certainly makes it possible to take photos with no one else in them!
For perhaps the best view of The Treasury, head to the . It was empty when we were there and afforded us great views of the along the way!
Should you wish to take an animal ride through the ruins and up to the famous , then this is a popular place to pick up your ride. There are also horse-drawn carriages here at the end of the day to take you back to the visitor’s centre car park if you are too exhausted to walk (which many people seem to be!).

Top Descriptions

This may be the second most visited building in , ( being the first), but it is arguably the most marvellous. It is bigger than , and as it is importantly located atop a mountainous viewpoint, the grandeur is just that little bit more. Thanks to its distance from the entrance, this site can actually be viewed in relative serenity at points in the day. The walk here alone can be a highlight for many, but to then be rewarded with Ad -Deir makes the whole thing a truly unforgettable experience. – Sarah

Top Tips

The walk to the Monastery is said to be 10km from the very beginning of the entrance, and does indeed include 850 steps at the end. This is quite enjoyable for a seasoned hiker (and by seasoned, we mean one used to the heat!), but if you are not then factor in the time it will take you to reach this wondrous site (or rent a donkey/camel) and remember to appreciate the scenery as you go.
There is an overpriced café and some basic toilet facilities here, so you can rest a while and watch the herders (both shepherds and tour guides) pass you by.
Don’t miss some excellent viewpoints adjacent to this site. They may be some of the best views Jordan has to offer. Simply continue on the well trodden path that leads up past the café and to the right until the paths culminate at precipitious and dramatic views.
