Top Descriptions

With views across the Jordan Valley, over Jerusalem, and down to the Dead Sea, Mount Nebo viewpoint has more to offer than the average hilltop. Couple this with some wonderful Byzantine mosaics and, most impressive of all, an almost perfectly preserved 531 AD mosaic, it is easy to get carried away with the historical worth of this site. It can get busy with pilgrims and tourists alike, but is well worth the ride up from or a Dead Sea resort. – Sarah

This small and active church has a lot to offer. Both the interior and exterior are pleasantly decorated and there is a vault-come-museum which houses limited but well presented mosaic replicas and information on John the Baptist . It is also possible to climb the bell tower for perhaps the best views of ! – Sarah

Representing the Middle East and dating back to the 6th century AD, the Madaba Mosaic Map contains the earliest cartographic depiction of Jerusalem. The art of the piece alone is quite captivating, but the setting in the , along with knowing just a little about this land’s history, creates the right ingredients to find this a fascinating site. – Sarah

Top Tips

The church in which the mosaic lies, St George’s, is still very much active; though open at 7am for service, it is not possible to see the mosaic before 8am.
