Top Descriptions

The Alaverdi Copper Factory was founded in the 18th century and at its peak was reportedly producing more than 10% of all the copper for the Russian Federation. Though no longer employing as much of the town as it once did, this is still an active factory and therefore not a landmark for the public to visit. Nevertheless, the smell of copper fills the air and the smoking chimney and decaying factory are indeed prominent features of the skyline.

Many locals have had a family member work here at one time or the other. If you can communicate then strike up a conversation about the factory to find out more.
If you want to avoid the smell of the factory during your stay here, consider staying at which is one the farthest away guesthousesfrom the centre without being too far away.

Route:This fairly short hike starts at . You’ll want to take the local vehicle road east out of town. It should start winding down as you head out of Sanahin, and just after the bend you should see a small foot trail on the right heading up and away from the road. Take this trail for 15 minutes or so until it re-connects with the road. You should now see the village of Akner ahead of you.

(continued):Walk through Akner, taking a left turn when you see the first large open field heading toward the village of Haghpat. Walk northeast across this field until you get to two large and rusty water pipes heading downhill, with a trail following partly beside them. Follow this path down, being careful not to slip, and you should see Kayan Fortress to your left in the distance as you descend to the main road. You can either take the main road into Haghpat, or there’s a small trail to the right that will also take you up to the village and to .

Top Descriptions

(click on the navigation tab above for detailed directions)
This is a fairly short and straightforward hike starting at and finishing at . Covering around 8km and taking between 2 and 3 hours, you’ll pass along main roads, up small tracks, through patches of woods and across clearings before finally seeing in the distance. Approaching the monastery in this way is one of the best possible ways of seeing it for the first time and comes well recommended.

If you’ve written a description for Sanahin Monastery to Haghpat Monastery Hike (Alaverdi) you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

A good extension to this hike would be to start at on the , instead of at . The total hike should then be about 4 hours in length.
Though this hike can be done alone, but it might be better to contact Alaverdi Guides (see ‘communication’ above for contact details) and hire someone local to help you navigate the local dogs and twists and turns. The guides also provide some interesting information, and hiking poles too for those slippery moments.
A taxi back from to shouldn’t cost you more than between AMD1,500 and AMD2,000. There are marshrutka that ply this route too, leaving from and costing AMD200, but these don’t leave so frequently – especially in the winter.

Top Descriptions

Most likely built around 976 (and founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh), Haghpat Monastery is a UNESCO-heritage religious complex in the town of Haghpat about 15km from more popular . Increasingly visited by tourists, and visible from equally-if-not-more famous , this is one of the most impressive historical sites in . The monastery complex consists of multiple buildings, including chapels, churches and scriptoriums, and some of the most unique and intricately carved khachkars can be found here too. This site should not be missed if you’re in the area.

Top Tips

Consider visiting here by hiking to or from via the . You can do this unguided, but it might be better to give to the community by using the cooperative Alaverdi Guides who charge between AMD5,500 - 9,000 (depending on whether you need information or just a guide).
There’s a unique and interesting khachkar found here that shouldn’t be missed. You’ll know you’ve found it because Jesus himself is carved onto the cross, surrounded by his 12 Apostles as well as many other legendary figures. This khachkar is found beneath a roof between two buildings.
It doesn’t cost to enter this monastery, but you might want to consider leaving a small donation nonetheless. Perhaps buying some candles or souvenirs on site might have the same effect.
A taxi here from shouldn’t cost you more than between AMD1,500 - 2,000. There are marshrutky that run from for about AMD200 if you’re on a budget, but these can be a little infrequent – especially in the off season.

Top Descriptions

This is a small museum dedicated to the achievements of two brothers born in Sanahin, Anastas and Artem Mikoyan. Well presented, informative, and staffed by knowledgeable and enthusiastic members of the local Alaverdi Guides cooperative, if you’re in the Sanahin area visiting it would foolish not to drop in here also. The museum is only really one room upstairs, with detailed signs explaining the lives of the Mikoyan brothers in Armenian, English and Russian in some detail, but there is also an impressive MiG fighter plane on display just outside.

Top Tips

There is no ticket cost at the moment, although this may be changing in March 2018. Nevertheless, it doesn’t hurt to leave a donation of say AMD500 per person in the tips box on your way out.
A guide service is offered upon entrance, and it might very well be worth taking. Not only because the staff are fluent in three languages (Armenian, English and Russian), but also because many of the informative signs upstairs leave gaps to be explained by these staff. It’s also not possible to take photos to assist your memory or enable further research.
The staff here are members of the local cooperative Alaverdi Guides, and can organise some great hikes in the region such as the .
A taxi here from AMD1,000 - 1,500 to this museum in Sanahin shouldn’t cost you more than between AMD1,000 - 1,300 one way.

Built between the 5th and 7th centuries, Odzun Church is a well-preserved (and restored) basilica in the Armenian town of Odzun just a few kilometres away from the more popular town of . The space surrounding the church is littered with interesting khachgars and graves, with the mountains all around providing an impressive backdrop. What’s inside remains a mystery to us though, as the doors were locked at 11am on a Saturday.
