Touted as being the little Switzerland of Armenia by the local inhabitants, the well positioned (though somewhat run down) mountain town of Dilijan may not quite live up to that comparison but it certainly has its own charm. Set at a comfortable 1,500m, surrounded in every direction by Dilijan National Park and within easy reach of some excellent monasteries, Dilijan makes for an great place to break up the journey south to Lake Sevan and Yerevan or north to Tbilisi in Georgia via either Ijevan or Alaverdi. Just don’t expect for modern facilities here, although the new UWC Dilijan College is changing the situation somewhat.

Watch out for the taxi drivers here. Some of them can be quite dishonest and a little too persistent.
