Top Descriptions

You’ll have no doubt heard about Georgia by now. Whether it’s because of its hospitality and traditions, the free-flowing wine, the beautiful and ancient Christian architecture, or the excellent opportunities for hiking the Greater Caucasus Range, anyone who’s visited here is sure to return with mostly positive stories and a keen desire to return. It’s true though that Georgia is not a country yet developed and ready for tourism, nor is it a country of wealth and a certain future. Beggars are an all too common sight in Tbilisi, unemployment is high, and soviet-block architecture abounds. Even the transportation system is basic – although marshrutky do at least leave to a schedule nowadays, even if they are still driven rather crazily. Nevertheless, anyone who comes here with an open heart and mind and no expectations is bound to be impressed and warmed by this forgotten corner of still traditional Orthodox .

Top Tips

There’s not a great deal of English at the moment in Georgia, so either learn some Georgian (it has a beautiful and unique script) or brush up on your Russian if you’re planning on getting really rural. Russian is basically a lingua franca here. Saying that, it’s quite possible to travel in Georgia without either, as someone in your accommodation will usually be able to communicate in rudimentary English.
While it’s very possible to base yourself in and take day trips to many excellent sights and locations, do try to get out of the capital. You’ll get a much better feel for the country, and some of the most interesting places to stay are in the rural parts.
Georgia is a great destination at any time of the year. While the summer months are popular for hiking out of locations such as , in the winter it’s quite possible to get about easily still. Skiing and snowboarding is also becoming increasingly popular internationally, with resorts such as and attracting many people yearly from Russian and Eastern Europe.
Georgian food is great (and meat heavy), but you’ll have little choice but to eat it as there’s very limited international cuisine here. Aside from a handful of more-or-less decent Middle Eastern, Indian and Italian restaurants, even the capital is lacking on this front. Thankfully, the local fare is cheap and filling, and goes great with a bottle (or two) of local wine.
