Mtskheta has a long history of prominence in Georgia, and with its recent UNESCO World Heritage status and position as the ‘headquarters’ of the Georgian Orthodox Church it’s no wonder it remains important today for both domestic and international tourists. Don’t come expecting anything too grand or well facilitated, though. Beautifully positioned at the confluence of two rivers, with Jvari Church on a hill overlooking the town, Mtskheta is a simple, well maintained and accessible place that’s very much worth a day trip from Tbilisi at the very least.

Top Tips
Most people want to visit Jvari Church while in Mtskheta, and the easiest way to do so is to take a taxi for around GEL15 (return trip with some time waiting). You can walk there also in about an hour each way if you’re on a budget.
Whatever you do, don’t miss out Svetitskhoveli Cathedral – not that you can really miss it. It’s the impressive centrepiece of this otherwise beautiful and peaceful little town and is well worth dedicating some time to.
