Less than 15km south of the Russian border, and over 150km north of Tbilisi along the Military Highway is Stepantsminda – still called Kazbegi by many. Encircled by the impressive and towering Mount Shani and the 5,047m Mount Kazbek, this town has an excellent location for hiking in the High Caucasus when the season is right. But what makes this town most famous is the picturesque Gergeti Holy Trinity Church and the wonderful views on offer in the surrounding area. Whether you visit in summer or winter, if you’re at all a fan of hiking and the mountains you’re bound to be impressed.
