The name Colombia has been synonymous with drugs and danger for as long as most of us can remember, and it was probably exactly that notoriety that drew in the backpackers after those most turbulent years. But what’s emerged now is one of the friendliest, most forward thinking and exciting adventure destinations in this part of the Americas. Sure, the country is still not 100% safe, but you’re just as likely to run into trouble here as you are on the streets of London. With the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Andes, the Amazon, a long colonial history, and an intriguing mix of indigenous cultures, Colombia is one of the best value and most alluring countries around. As the safety factor continues to climb, so too will the tourist numbers. Perhaps you should come before it gets too crowded. – Daniel

Although Colombia is a lot safer than it once was, it still pays to be on your guard. Nevertheless, follow normal safety precautions with regards to flashing your wealth and walking alone at night and you’ll be fine.
This is a big country with lots on offer, so if you don’t have a great deal of time then try to focus on one or two departments – and promise yourself that you’ll return.
If you’re a hiker, there are some great opportunities here. Don’t miss out on hikes to the Lost City or the Paramo de Oceta.
