      The Armenian Genocide Museum is a moving commitment to remembering and honouring the Armenians who lost their lives during a long line of conflicts with Turkey. The lighting and building structure (descending a level as you walk through) contributes to the sense of despair commonly felt here. There are various sections to the photo exhibits (including a women and children’s part) which details quite graphically the atrocities that many experienced. Much of the displays are dedicated to medium length passages of enlightening text.

            This is one of the few (perhaps only?) museums that pay homage to one of the world’s most famous leaders, Joseph Stalin. The exhibits are a predominately photographic display showing Stalin’s life from his younger years until his death. A few other pieces are also included that reportedly either belonged to the man or were gifted to him, such as furniture, his sword, carpets and chinaware. Perhaps the most notable item is one of his death masks, which is eerily lit up as the centre piece of the final room and surrounded by red drapes.

            The building that houses the exhibits is quite grand, and is perhaps worth a visit if you are in – even if you have no interest in Stalin.
            There are English speaking staff on hand should you have any questions or wish to request a guide (the exhbits often lack translations).
            The souvenir shop has a wide collection of Stalin trinkets that you are unlikely to find outside of this region.

                  This is one of those small, low-key, hodge-podge of a museums. It doesn’t seem too unreasonable to think that perhaps the locals grabbed together the towns junk and treasures alike to make up two floors worth of “exhibits”. Taxidermist animals stand alongside old skis, portraits and glassware. The building, however, does certainly have some colonial charm.

                        Do pay attention to the opening times. You will be kicked out for a couple of hours come midday.
                        Whether they are replicas or not, make sure you check out the gruesome shrunken heads.
                        It’s worth visiting just for the Temple of the Sun replica in the grounds. It’s particularly photogenic on a clear and sunny day.
