Bedford is a small riverside town in the county of Bedfordshire and a popular commuter destination. With excellent rail links to , a central location, and a recent surge in urban development, many people are moving here to experience life on the . And it’s a multicultural place too, with one of the largest proportions of Italians in the UK, and thriving Indian and Polish communities. But as scenic as the ‘town of markets’ might be, there is a rougher quality to Bedford – as there are with many similar settlements in , especially on the high street at the weekend. Nevertheless, whether you’ve grown up in Bedford or have just moved here, there is certainly enough on offer in the surrounding areas to keep you busy for some time – even if it is quite grey and flat. – Daniel

If you’re looking for a pleasant park close to the town centre, then the might make for a good choice – especially if you’re a dog walker or it’s a clear day.
It’s worth looking into . It’s a lovely spot on a clear day, and it’s particularly exciting because of the that’s based there.

Top Descriptions

This two-hour introduction is a great (and necessary) starter to your new life as a wakeboarder. Expect to have your helmet, lifejacket, kneeboard and ‘easy-up’ board included in the GBP39 price. After a short safety video, a bit of practising on the grass, and three successful laps on the kneeboards, you’ll be ready to stand up and give the real thing a go. Just don’t let yourself get annoyed by the queues; this is a popular activity on a lovely day.- Daniel

If you’ve written a description for Cable Tow Wakeboarding Introduction (Box End Park) you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

Wakeboarding is a lot more tiring at first then you’d expect. The cable tow is faster than it looks, and it tugs you quite hard – so be prepared to ache pretty much all over for the next few days.
Don’t give up if you fall in straight away the first few times. Many first-timers do! Just listen to the advice of the staff and try, try and try again until you get it. Also, it’s considered bad etiquette to laugh at those that do fall in – as much as you might want to ;-).
Don’t accept a broken board, even if the staff tell you that it’s fine. You’ll really struggle to get up at first, especially with a broken ‘easy-up’ board – which are heavier and more cumbersome anyway.
If you see someone fall in near to the start, help them get their board up the steps. It’s really difficult to do so on your own.

Top Descriptions

Box End Park has developed very positively as a family run business over the years, especially more recently due to the introduction of a man-made lake, function room and restaurant. On a clear day, paddling in the water, jumping into the Aqua Park or attempting the more strenuous are all fun activities, and this is a great place to bring the family. It’s not cheap, however, so perhaps save this one for a special occasion. – Daniel

Top Tips

Children must be accompanied by an adult on the Aqua Park, making the £15 an hour entrance fee quite steep. The children love it though, so this would be a good idea for a birthday party or special event.
While this park is best explored during a sunny day, it can get quite busy during the good weather. The lakes aren’t particularly deep and so they don’t get too cold, so you might want to consider coming here during the off season if you prefer things quieter.
This is one of the better wakeboarding parks in , with some great ramps and rails to try out. The two-hour is great value for money, and a good introduction to how fun and strenuous this sport is!

Top Tips

The slices of cake here are huge! If you’re at all health conscious, you’ll want to share a slice between two at least.
Bar service can be a little slow, especially on busy days such as the Sunday carvery. Try to buy drinks by the round, and order your food at the same time to save you queuing up twice.
If you can’t finish any of your food, the staff will be more than happy to provide you with a take-away box. This might come in especially handy with the supersized desserts.

Start location:end of Mill Lane
End location:end of Mill Lane

Route:Cross the bridge at the end of Mill Lane and then take an immediate left following the river. Keep following as close to the river as you can. The path might be a bit overgrown, but there’s definitely one there. You will pass under a bridge and then eventually come to the end of the field where the track will loop back on the other side of that field. Follow that track until you are opposite the Mill Lane bridge again.

(continued)On your left, you will see a small wooden arched bridge taking you into another field facing the Great Denham housing estate. Take the immediate right through a gate that takes you into the adjacent field and then take the immediate left and follow this path for a little while. After 10 or so minutes you will near a lake/river and then you will have to take another left back into the main field heading towards the housing estate. This path will run out when you reach the buildings, at which point you can turn around and return back the way you came.
