Top Descriptions

This is a remote, quiet and poorly facilitated border. It is, however, fairly smooth, clear and well-organised.

Top Tips

The first desk you come to on the Vietnamese side will change money for you at an acceptable rate (although watch out for bills being skimmed off). You’ll want to have crisp USDs for your visa, which can be bought on arrival.
Expect a whole array of random charges on the Lao side. We paid LAK10,000 for processing, LAK20,000 for a stamping fee, LAK5,000 for a temperature check and a further USD2 for who knows what! If you question the immigration officers about it, they very quickly get annoyed.
If you’re not Vietnamese or Lao, you will no doubt hold the bus up. Try to have everything in order to move things along quickly.
As far as is visible, there are only toilets on the Vietnamese side of the border.

Top Descriptions

This is a pretty straightforward, well-organised and relaxed border crossing at Lunga Lunga between coastal and . Expect the border formalities to be professional, but to take some time (especially if you arrive with a bus load of people). There is a 6.5km distance to be covered between the border post at Lunga Lunga and the Tanzanian Horohoro side.

If you’ve written a description for Lunga Lunga (Kenya-Tanzania Border) you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

First, on the Kenyan side, you’ll have your yellow fever certificate checked before entering into a sit down/stand up immigration queue. After your stamp, head to the Horohoro post in about a 5-minute walk away before again having your certificate checked. If you need to buy a visa, you’ll need to complete a blue form and pay someone in a separate office (effectively skipping the remaining queues).
Be sure to bring your yellow fever certificate as well as the correct amount of post-2006 US dollars for the visa fee (if you haven’t already organised yours in advance).
To change money, once you’ve been stamped into , start walking out of the car park towards the main exit gate. Someone should approach you pretty quickly. At the time of writing, KES1,000 was TZS20,000.

If you have a tip about Lunga Lunga (Kenya-Tanzania Border) and would like to share that information with the community, contact [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Descriptions

This is a fairly sizeable, modernish and well organised border post for East Africa. It can get busy though, so do be prepared. The with Modern Coast Express is a good option, as they’ll take you through the border crossing procedure and wait for you to re-board.

If you’ve written a description for Busia (Uganda-Kenya) Border you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

Border formalities shouldn’t take long at all (the Ugandan exit and Kenyan entry counters are right next to each other), though if you’re coming through with a bus company such as or Easy Coach from , expect to wait for a solid hour for everyone to get through.
If you’re in need of the toilet, wait until the Kenyan side unless you’re happy to use (and pay for) a small metal shack. & for money exchange, a small official counter can be found on your left just as you’re leaving the immigration office.
Yellow fever certifications are definitely checked at this border so keep yours to hand.

Top Descriptions

This is a fairly straightforward and simple border crossing, with stress on the simple. Don’t expect much in the way of facilities here, though you can expect friendlier border officials than usual – particularly when arriving on the side.

Top Tips

You won’t need to do anything on the Rwandan side of the border (although there are toilets behind the Rwandan immigration office on your left should you need them), so continue straight over by foot for less than 5 minutes to the Ugandan side. You will find the Ugandan immigration office on your left.
Once at the Ugandan immigration office, you will need to queue three times. The first is to the far right of the office. Here they will stamp you out of Rwanda and ask you to complete a (rather pointless) arrival form. After you receive your stamp, you must then go to a small shed about 100m in front of the office to have a friendly policeman add your details to his ledger and give you a small ticket. You will then head back to the queue on the left of the first queue to hand in your ticket and your arrival card and have your passport stamped. If you don’t already have your visa, the process may be slightly different.
Onward travel is quite limited, but a boda-boda shouldn’t cost more than UGX4,000 for the 15-minute (9km) journey to from where you can find onward transport.
