Top Tips

Don’t expect much of a backpacker feel to the town. Much like , Buffalo Town seems to be a popular place for white retirees to enjoy the Western Cape. It would appear that many of the homes here are also vacated for most of the year making the town respectfully sleepy.
A shouldn’t cost you more than ZAR250.
If you’re planning to walk from here back to , you might want to stock up on water and snacks in along the way. There is a cafe or two in Buffalo Town, but it’s not as well serviced in general.

The Directions

Starting at (or a couple of kilometres west of there if that’s where your taxi drops you), head east along to . The walk between the two beaches is very pleasant and shouldn’t take you more than an hour and a half. You might want to time your arrival at with lunchtime so that you can enjoy a pleasant meal at or a light snack at .

When you’re ready to leave , head east up the main road hugging the coast for about 30 minutes. The road will almost bend back on itself as it climbs uphill, affording some excellent views of Buffalo Bay below. Once at the top of the hill, it shouldn’t take you too long until you come to a sign on your left pointing right to ‘Brenton Lake’. Take this right turning and walk all the way down the next hill. You should now be crossing over the headlands, with in the distance.

Follow this road down the hill until you get to a T junction and then take a left. Stick on that road for another 10 or so minutes until you come to a crossroads with a turning on your left, a private and blocked road on your right and a ‘residents only’ road straight ahead. Regardless of not being a resident, continue straight ahead for another 10 minutes until you reach the train tracks. Take a right at the train tracks and follow them all the way back to ! It shouldn’t be more than an hour from here – probably less!

Top Tips

It’s meant to be possible to email the booking agency 30 minutes before departure, but you might be better off just calling them. We tried emailing on the day and no one responded.
If you want to actually go to and not just ‘Buffalo Bay beach side’ which it turns out is 2km further west, be clear with the driver.
If this company has an office somewhere in , we certainly can’t find it!
