While staying here you’ll have the pleasure of every night at 7 😉 with the owner, Wayne (who seems kind and genuine and willing to help out).
Be forewarned that there will be no electricity in your room bar a couple of solar lights. Everyone must charge at the bar in the , which can be problematic if you have work to do while staying here. No electricity also mean no fans, which means hot indeed.

Top Tips

Were we not given the upgrade from a tent (fixed) to a double room (with bathroom), Distant Relatives may not have ended up being half as good value. The truth is though that we were graciously upgraded for our three-day stay, and if you’re lucky you might be too (try asking about discounts on the rooms ;)).
Although this accommodation backs onto in Kilifi Creek, expect to be sharing this space with the local (and very inquisitive) community.
If you have a problem with showering in a bamboo thicket or using a compost toilet, then Distant Relatives might not be the place for you. But if you’re a bit of an eco-warrior, you might just call this place paradise.
We didn’t find the atmosphere too inviting here – perhaps because so many guests were in fact volunteering at the eco lodge instead of just passing through. Oh, and watch out for food-banditry in the kitchen ;).

Top Descriptions

Though basic, this campsite is great value for the price of the tour. The wooded huts are comfortable and the hot water in the shabby en-suites really works! The staff are friendly and the grounds quiet. Wake up to the sight of Kilimanjaro and fall asleep under stunningly starry skies (weather permitting).

Top Tips

Keep an eye out for views of Kilimanjaro from the dining area (and just about from the rooms), do let the showers run as they will get surprisingly hot, and allay yourself of any fears of animal encounters – there is an electric fence surrounding the camp.
There is 24-hour power here, so if there’s no juice in your room then just ask a member of staff to switch it on for you ;).
There is a degree of flexibility with regards to meal times, so do speak to the chef – he seems very accommodating.

Top Tips

This is the cheaper brother (or cousin) to the below it. While you can use the facilities of the latter, the Top Camp feels very much separate (and more poorly facilitated) than the lake-side and shady camp below. NOTE that you will also have to hike for ten or so minutes up or down between the two camps.
If you want to order breakfast from the , you’d be better off putting your order in the night before. It might even just be quicker to head down to the as service will be more consistent there – plus there’ll be more on offer.
It is possible to rent bikes at the below should you wish to head around the lake or to Hells Gate National Park.
