Top Descriptions

Located 16km outside of , this site is one of best examples of ancient Buddhist art and sculpture. With 51 major caves, hundreds of carvings and a number of preserved/restored paintings, there is a lot to see here. The Buddhist statues range in height from 16 metres to 2 centimetres and can be found in most nooks and crannies! Well worth a visit.

Top Tips

This is a very popular site. Arrive as early as possible, and be prepared to take it slow and steady.
It is common for some caves to be closed for restoration at one time or another, but with so many to choose from this is unlikely to affect a visit.
Although this site can be tiring for some, there is an electric car/bus for CNY10 to return you to the entrance.
Don’t miss out on visiting the , and while you’re here. They’re all included in the same site.

Top Descriptions

This is fairly large and impressive cave with a reclining Buddha as its centrepiece. With only a stiff 10-minute climb from the , you’d be mad not to visit the both together. With a torch you can explore the second cavern which is just as large as the first, but that little bit creepier and more adventurous.

Top Tips

Solid sandals should be enough to explore this cave. The floor isn’t too slippery or wet, although it is quite uneven in places thanks to the water erosion.
It is possible to rent a flashlight here if you’ve forgotten yours. You can go about 50-100m inside Poukham Cave without one, though – although it would make things a lot easier if you did!
Make sure you pack your swimwear so that you can visit the at the same time. They’re both included in the same LAK10,000 ticket.
If you time your visit right, you could have a peaceful experience here. Otherwise, watch out for the large groups of Korean tourists that just love .

This cave is very much a do-it-yourself activity. Someone will no doubt appear to open the entrance, but once inside you’re very much on your own unless you pay for the guide. There are no lights inside, though some parts of cave are well lit and large. How deep you go really depends on your fortitude.

The Directions

To reach the caves on foot, head out of town along the main road for about 3km. You’ll see the signpost on your right after about 30 minutes or so (most of the sign is in Lao, so look closely for ‘Pathok Caves’).

There are two caves here, one of which is much larger and better maintained than the other.

Top Tips

The main cave is obvious as there’s a large stairway leading to the entrance. To get to the second (much narrower and darker) cave, follow the path that hugs the cliff to the right of that stairway for about 100m.
If you forgot to bring a flashlight, with some persuasion the local guides will rent you theirs for LAK5,000.
To best explore the area properly, you might want to wear shoes of some sort (and consider hiring a guide). There are plenty of spiders around, and most likely some snakes too.
