Top Descriptions

The Sevanavank Monastery complex, which includes not only the main monastery but also the Holy Mother of God Church, is one of the most popular touristic sights in . Come on a summer’s day and you’ll find the peninsula this complex rests upon bustling with tourists, but come at other times of year (such as in the winter) and you might find that you have this spot all to yourself. Set picturesquely and peacefully overlooking , with relatively easy access from – and with some noteworthy khachgars too, it’s no wonder that Sevanavank has become somewhat of a picture-postcard attraction.

Top Tips

Pay careful attention to the interesting khatchgar inside the main monastery. There’s what appears to be a dread-headed Jesus and scenes depicting the classic biblical stories. A member of staff will be happy to explain this to you in Russian, and will be happier still to receive a donation of say AMD500 per person.
Consider visiting here from on a , including the sights of and the .
The area below the monastery is much better facilitated than at most similar sites in , with numerous restaurants on offer such as . Don’t expect good value for money here though or particularly friendly touts.
There are toilets on and around this site, but you’ll be expected to pay AMD200 for the pleasure of using them.

Top Descriptions

UNESCO-listed Geghard Monastery is one of the most popular tourist sites in , and it’s not hard to see why. In a land of many ancient churches and monasteries, this 4th-century example really stands out as a memorable and worthwhile experience. Atmospheric, well situated at the end of the Azat River Gorge, and partially carved out of the mountain, it’s hard not to find Geghard an evocative site. As well as the main temple complex with its somewhat unique wall carvings and shadowy/smoky interior, there is a cave temple to explore with excellent acoustics and numerous fine examples of khachkars dotted about.

If you’ve written a description for Geghard Monastery (Garni Yerevan) you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

Explore this site fully as there are some hidden gems here, such as the carvings of two large cats and a bird holding a rat. The acoustics in some of the rooms are also fantastic, and there is a famous sweet bread called gata sold outside by the wheel.
Consider visiting this site in combination with a trip to . The two together make for an excellent day out. It’s also apparently possible to hike here from as an extension of the .
The easiest way to get here is to take a from or . There are no public buses (marshrutky) that run beyond Goght, which is walkable but still a few kilometres away.
There is a bathroom at the back of this complex, but you’ll need to have AMD100 in change to use it.

Garni Temple is the last remaining Greco-Roman colonnaded structure to be found in or the former Soviet Union, and if that weren’t enough to draw you here then come for the scenery alone. Effectively set on a pedestal of rock and surrounded by a ring of impressive mountains and gorges, Garni Temple is well situated to take full advantage of its surroundings. The structure itself isn’t too large or unique, and the inside is almost empty, but how well reconstructed the site is, its location, and its position just 30km outside of in the village of all add up to create one of Armenia’s most popular tourist attractions.

Karnak is one of the biggest ancient complex attractions in the world. Though much of the site is in decay, what remains is still captivating. The Great Hypostyle Hall is probably the highlight, with many columns still standing. Wandering around the rest of the complex and wider grounds is also good fun, taking the time to examine as much as possible as any fallen, leaning, or crumbled rock, may well have something to behold. – Sarah

Top Tips

There are bathrooms and guides at the entrance, should you be looking for either.
This may be a popular site with tour groups but it is possible to stray from the main path and feel as though you are discovering your own ancient relics.
There is a bit of a walk from the car park to the entrance, and around the site itself, so do consider bringing hats and plenty of water, especially in the summer heat.
The sound and light show that is put on in the evenings runs at different times for English, German and French. These times alternate daily, so do check before you come.

Luxor Temple can easily lure one into wonderful past. The avenue of human headed sphinx offer some well preserved relics, but it is the two, seated, Ramessess which remain at the entrance of the temple that instantly instil a sense of awe and anticipation. Though crumbled in places, the inside does have enough to capture most visitors’ imaginations and admiration; columns, statues and hieroglyphs. It may be smaller than nearby , but it is arguably no less impressive. – Sarah

The Directions

To get here, take the and alight at the sign for Tongoni Ruins (the driver should tell you when to get off if you ask). From the sign, it’s a 15-minute walk down a dirt track toward the ruins and the sea. There’s only one turning – a fork in the road that you should head left at – so you shouldn’t get lost. Ask any villager for ‘mogofu’ if you do.

Although some travel guides list the entrance cost at TZS10,000, the ticket office was closed when we were there and no one was around to take payment. Perhaps you’ll be as lucky, because otherwise you might find the attraction a little overpriced.
Make sure you bus here early in the day. Buses seem to be quite infrequent coming back as the coastal road to Pangani doesn’t receive much traffic.
