        The Directions

This walk follows as far as the fork that divides the main Congo Nile trail from the Pfunda subtrail. You can find this fork about 20 minutes on the road beyond the brewery in Rubona. You will see a clear signpost indicating that straight on leads to the main trail and that left is for the subtrail. For the most impressive views around, take the road heading left onto the subtrail.

This trail runs as far as the Pfunda Tea Estate 30km away, but you can choose to walk along it for as long as you care to. The first hour and a half up is particularly inviting. At first you will pass through a school before heading further up the mountain and through small villages (full of excited children). Behind you should be some excellent panoramic views of and as you climb higher, excellent views also of Nyiragongo Volcano – on a clear day at least.

If you keep climbing, you will lose the views of the lake but other volcanic peaks of the should start to appear to your left. To return, either continue on to Pfunda (this would be a push in one day) or return the way you came. A moto taxi from the brewery back to should cost no more than USD1,500 or you can walk if you still have the energy.

        Top Tips

If you walk all the way from , this is quite a tiring walk – especially on a hot day – so do bring supplies.
On the subtrail, watch out for when the school kicks out. If you’re there when it does, expect to be mobbed by (potentially) hundreds of children! High five as many as you can ;).
If you want to eat somewhere near the base of the trail, consider or perhaps even .

                The Directions

Head to the second road behind and walk right beyond the . You will pass a petrol station and come to a fork in the road. Take the right turning towards the lake and follow this road along the lake for at least 20 minutes. After some time, you will reach a hydroelectic power plant and then shortly after a major junction. The lake side road will be guarded by military and closed to the public. Take the left hand road leading uphill and away from the lake. Stay on this road for about 30 or so minutes, all the time heading uphill.

You will pass through the busy roadside village of Gitsamba and shortly after see sharp signposted right. The sign will read ‘Congo Nile Trail: . Take this turning up and through the village for about 1km. Prepare to be accosted by groups of excited children! Take some time to admire the view from the top, which on a clear day should show the DRC city of Goma and the inspiring perfect cone of Nyiragongo Volcano. After you’ve spent some time hearing enjoying the view, return the way you came to the main road and continue along and downhill to the small town of Rubona.

Once in Rubona, you will have two choices: either walk through largest brewery and continue along that road for as long as you care to along the Congo Nile main trail (stopping at after 30 minutes or so if you need to take a break), or head right into the resort-strip section of Rubona, finishing with a dip at after about 20 or so minutes or stopping along the way for refreshments at . Of course, if you had the time and the inclination you could even combine both routes!

You can walk back the way you came if you have the energy, or catch a minibus outside of the brewery back to for about RWF300.

                Top Tips

Do bring along some snacks and plenty of water – there’s no too much along the way here.
Don’t expect the quietest of walks; this route follows a main road which can be quite busy at times. The section around the brewery can also be particularly dusty and busy.
To avoid eating at the overpriced (or other restaurant-resorts in Rubona), consider catching the minibus (RWF300) back to for a cheap and tasty all-day buffet at .

With your Back to , head right on the road through town. Within a few minutes you should see a very clear sign on your left saying ‘Congo Nile Trail: Gisovu subtrail 64km’. If you can see the sign you are on the right road.

Follow this dusty road up and out of town for as long as you care to. Within an hour you should have some very good views of below and be coming out of the town. You should also be able to clearly see a small track on the opposite hill below leading through the village. You may want to return this way instead of coming back down the same dusty road you climbed.

Within two and a half hours of walking almost continually uphill, you will be afforded some excellent panoramas of and the lake below. Return the way you came or through one of the local tracks heading through the villages.

                        Top Tips

This trail is hot and dusty so do bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat if you have one.
Expect the trail going out to take longer than the trail coming back as it’s all uphill.
There’s very little in the way of shops once you get an hour or so along the trail. However, moto taxis do pass frequently enough should you tire of walking and want to return to town quickly.
