Most people have probably heard something about the horrors of the Armenian Genocide, but few really know much about the country today. One of the earliest nations to officially adopt Christianity and the last remaining vestige of ancient Anatolia, Armenia is a small, landlocked, mountainous and mostly high-altitude country on the border of and that holds steadfast onto its culture and traditions. Riddled with historical sights and some excellent opportunities for outdoor activities (particularly hiking), it’s no wonder that tourism has been on the increase here in recent years. Yet the population of Armenia still continues to decline, and those that do remain (though friendly and welcoming) struggle with general poverty and high unemployment. Indeed, Armenia isn’t the cleanest or most developed of countries, but it does certainly offer a fascinating insight into traditional Orthodox and is well worth at least a couple of weeks of your time.

Top Tips

There’s not a great deal of English at the moment in Armenia, so either learn some Armenian or brush up on your Russian if you’re planning on getting really rural as it’s basically a lingua franca here. Saying that, it’s quite possible to travel in Armenia without either, as someone in your accommodation will usually be able to communicate in rudimentary English.
While it’s very possible to base yourself in and take day trips to many great sights and locations (such as , or the ), do try to get out of the capital. You’ll get a much better feel for the country, and some of the most interesting places to stay are in the rural parts.
Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are tense to say the least, and neither country is particularly happy with the other. Stay abreast of any unfolding situations and perhaps avoid bringing up the situation too much with locals.
Armenian food is delicious, particularly khorovats (BBQ) which is done very well here. You’ll be hard pressed to find anything but Armenian food here though, except for in the capital which has some great restaurants on offer.

You’ll have no doubt heard about Georgia by now. Whether it’s because of its hospitality and traditions, the free-flowing wine, the beautiful and ancient Christian architecture, or the excellent opportunities for hiking the Greater Caucasus Range, anyone who’s visited here is sure to return with mostly positive stories and a keen desire to return. It’s true though that Georgia is not a country yet developed and ready for tourism, nor is it a country of wealth and a certain future. Beggars are an all too common sight in Tbilisi, unemployment is high, and soviet-block architecture abounds. Even the transportation system is basic – although marshrutky do at least leave to a schedule nowadays, even if they are still driven rather crazily. Nevertheless, anyone who comes here with an open heart and mind and no expectations is bound to be impressed and warmed by this forgotten corner of still traditional Orthodox .

There’s not a great deal of English at the moment in Georgia, so either learn some Georgian (it has a beautiful and unique script) or brush up on your Russian if you’re planning on getting really rural. Russian is basically a lingua franca here. Saying that, it’s quite possible to travel in Georgia without either, as someone in your accommodation will usually be able to communicate in rudimentary English.

Georgia is a great destination at any time of the year. While the summer months are popular for hiking out of locations such as , in the winter it’s quite possible to get about easily still. Skiing and snowboarding is also becoming increasingly popular internationally, with resorts such as and attracting many people yearly from Russian and Eastern Europe.
Georgian food is great (and meat heavy), but you’ll have little choice but to eat it as there’s very limited international cuisine here. Aside from a handful of more-or-less decent Middle Eastern, Indian and Italian restaurants, even the capital is lacking on this front. Thankfully, the local fare is cheap and filling, and goes great with a bottle (or two) of local wine.

Top Descriptions

Wales may not see as many tourists as its more famous (and flatter) neighbour , but it perhaps has more to offer at slightly better value – especially if you’re into the outdoors. Sure, transport is still expensive, and transit times can be quite slow, but with some impressive national parks such as Snowdon and , an extensive coastline, and some genuinely warmer people, Wales has a good deal to offer the casual tourist. Some cities can be a bit industrial and rough around the edges it’s true, but locations such as might just surprise you with how much clean green space there is. The language is fun too, especially with names such as Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. – Daniel

Top Tips

To keep costs down, try to book your transportation as far in advance as possible. You’ll pay a premium if you book on the day at the station, and quite often it’s cheaper to book two single tickets to get from A to B to C then it is to book a ticket straight from A to C.
If you decide to drive in the UK, do make sure you pay careful attention to the road laws. There are speed cameras everywhere, and it’s illegal to drive in a bus lane. Lots of people get fined for simple things as well, such as parking in the wrong place. In fact, parking can be a nightmare, so if you have the money and the foresight, perhaps just use the extensive public transportation system.
If you’re on a budget, look out for the pub chain JD Wetherspoon as this is probably the cheapest ‘pub grub’ around.

Top Descriptions

Watered by the Nile and fed by tourism, Egypt is suffering somewhat at the moment as many countries are in the region. Here, though, the ancient wonders of the Egyptians should guarantee the country countless future heydays, although who knows when the next will be. If you know the country well, we’d love to add your description here. – Daniel

Top Tips

Don’t be put off completely by the news. It is still perfectly feasible to travel here with a bit of planning and an ear to the ground.
Hassle is famously high in Egypt, and the situation’s only gotten worse with the decline in tourism. There are some very poor people here, so if you do visit try to leave your money in their hands instead of in the hands of foreign tour operators.
