At this T-junction, take a right and follow this road for a little less than 2km also. You may need to follow your GPS on a map at this point to the Ancient Road, otherwise take a right at the triangular crossroads/roundabout and follow this road towards the highest mountain you can see. You’ll only have to travel for another km or so until you see an obvious car park on your left and the start of the trail.

This is the rural Zhendong Road, which you’ll follow all the way back into proper. This road will get progressively busier until you reach Jine Road after just over 3km. Take a left here and follow Jine road south for almost 3km back to where you started!

If you’ve conquered the and are now looking to go a bit farther, this 45km route takes you on a loop around taking in some of the nicest views and attractions on offer in the area. You’ll pass by rice fields, beside scenic streams and rivers, between low-rise green mountains and past classic Chinese temples. And as there’s only one fairly short section of this route that is particularly uphill, most riders should be able to accomplish this with just a little preparation.

Start location:Corner of Jine Road and Yinzhou Avenue
End location:Corner of Jine Road and Yinzhou Avenue

Route:Starting at the south-eastern corner of at the junction of Jine Road and Yinzhou Avenue, head southeast along Yinzhou Avenue for about 2km until you come to a right turning down Xinning Cross Road. The traffic at this part of the journey can be quite heavy with trucks, so stick to the cycle lanes. Follow this road south towards the mountains in the distance and after about 5.5km you’ll come to a large crossroads and here you’ll need to take a left down Mingzhou Avenue. Follow this road east for another 5km and you’ll come to .

(continued)Once at the lake, it’s a scenic 3km or so until you get to a small T-junction. You’ll pass on the left along the way should you want to stop and have a nose around, otherwise take a right at that T-junction and head uphill beyond the – stopping here only if you’re feeling opulent! This road will loop round to the west before joining onto the busier S7 highway. At this point, follow the highway north for about 1km until you see Nicedream Resort on your right. Take a left here and follow Guzi road round until you reach Dongqian Hu Avenue which runs northwest beside a river. Follow this road for just over 2km until you reach a roundabout.

(continued)At the roundabout, take a right and then very quickly a left onto what looks more like a large alley and less like a road. This is the rural Zhendong Road, which you’ll follow all the way back into proper. This road will get progressively busier until you reach Jine Road after just over 3km. Take a left here and follow Jine road south for almost 3km back to where you started!

If you have your own wheels, this is a quick and scenic way to escape the city and get out into rural . You’ll pass by rice fields, beside scenic streams and rivers, between low-rise green mountains and past classic Chinese temples. Of course, there’s too, which is one of Zhejiang’s biggest tourist draws – and it’s only 15km outside of . On a clear day, this is equal parts exercise and relaxation – and a good deal of pleasant scenery too.

Top Tips

Some portions of this journey, especially those closest to , can be a little hectic with traffic and trucks. There are bike lanes that cover most the journey to however, so make full use of them. Once at the lake itself, things really quieten down.
Consider giving yourself a bit of extra time to really appreciate the lake. The , for example, would make for an excellent – if rather fancy – spot for a scenic meal or drink (or three).
While it’s advisable to have your own bicycle, it’s very possible to use one of the city bicycle apps such as Mobike or Easybike. You’ll see these bikes abandoned all over the place on this loop, in fact.
There aren’t too many shops along this lakeside loop, so bring plenty of water (and a phone with GPS might be a good idea too!).
